Leona "Butch" Renquist, 83, longtime Julesburg resident, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Butch was born December 11, 1941, at Ovid, Colorado, to Vincent "Tex" and Anne (Mildenberger) Weinbender. She graduated from Julesburg High School with the class of 1959 and subsequently attended Hollywood Beauty School in Denver. She owned and operated Butch's Hair Shack, serving the community for the better part of 40 years before retiring. She made wonderful friends over the years, providing both hair care and the kind of "therapy sessions" that flow naturally when one sits in the stylist's chair.
On November 18, 1962, Butch married Larry Renquist at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Julesburg. The couple made their home 14 miles outside Julesburg, where they also owned and operated a feedlot for many years. After 20 years out in the country Butch had enough and bought and remodeled a home in the town of Julesburg and slowly moved Larry into town. Following Larry's death she went to stay with her sister LaVonne in Colorado Springs, where she appreciated the time spent with her sister.
Butch was a talented artist, skilled in ceramics, painting, drawing, and various forms of artistry. She had a remarkable eye for color and design, and was always impeccably put together. Butch loved golfing, and animals (especially cats), and was an enthusiastic CSU fan, especially when quarterback Bradley Van Pelt was on the field. Butch also enjoyed traveling when she got the chance.
Butch was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry Renquist; sister Lenora Troelstrup; nephew Troy Renquist; brothers-in-law Chico Troelstrup and Gary Hansmeier; and parents-in-law, Mervin and Alene (Koenig) Renquist.
Survivors include her son, Wade (Jeff Jacobson) Renquist of Aurora, Colorado; sister, LaVonne Weinbender of Colorado Springs; brothers-in-law Rod (Linda) Renquist, Randy (Susan) Renquist; sister-in-law Merv Hansmeier; former sister-in-law Joan Shaffer; her special "adopted children" (nephews and nieces): Shawn Barnes, Tina Kizer, Trever Renquist, Ben Renquist, Shad Hansmeier, Shane Hansmeier, Ryan Renquist, Kerri Long, Matt Renquist, Nels Troelstrup, Ned Troelstrup, Nile Troelstrup, and Nevin Troelstrup; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday May 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Prairie Hills Funeral Home Chapel in Julesburg, with visitation one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery at Julesburg.
