Delbert J. Harris, 89, of Julesburg, Colorado, passed away June 8, 2026, at Regent Park Care Center in Holyoke, Colorado.
Delbert was born January 12, 1937, in Ovid, Colorado, to Joe and Elsie (Webb) Harris. He graduated from Sedgwick High School with the Class of 1954. In 1956, Delbert married Alice Haag, and to this union two children, Delberta and Alan, were born.
As a boy, Delbert took on any odd job he could find - ranch work, and driving wheat trucks long before he had a driver's license. As a teenager he delivered LP gas bottles and helped his dad with carpentry. As a young man, he owned a liquor store in Ovid and farmed for a time, later working for Sedgwick County Road and Bridge and serving as a shift superintendent for Great Western Sugar Company. He spent many years doing custom hay cutting and hauling, but it was ranching that became his life's work and his true passion. Delbert was a cowboy at heart who loved his animals and the life that came with them.
On December 19, 1975, Delbert married Roberta Jeanne Simonsson, and the two shared 38 years. Through their marriage, he became a stepfather to Alan Sargent, Ronda Sargent and Sharla (Sargent) Kinnison.
Delbert was a member of the Ovid Oilers drag racing club and helped build the Julesburg Drag Strip, grading the strip where racing continues to this day. He was heavily involved in Sedgwick County 4-H, serving as leader of the Saddle Bums horse riding club and organizing many rodeos.
Delbert was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta; his parents, Joe and Elsie (Webb) Harris; and a great-grandson, Matthew Noah Harris.
He is survived by his children, Delberta Mae (Kurt) Fluharty of Joplin, Missouri, and Alan Delbert (Sylvia) Harris of Julesburg, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Johnna (Neil) Davis, Daniel Fluharty, Stephen (Sara) Fluharty, Joseph (Tasha) Harris, David (Elyshia) Harris, Timothy (Eva) Harris and Joshua (Monica) Harris; 22 great-grandchildren, Justin Davis, Brianna (Jon) Evans, Layla Davis, Stella Fluharty, Sadie Fluharty, Scarlett Fluharty, Sophie Fluharty, Shepherd Fluharty, Silas Fluharty, Owen Harris, Gavin Worley, Peyton Worley, Alexis Worley, Savanna Harris, Lucas Harris, Madison Harris, Phillip Harris, Elizabeth Harris, Jaelynn Harris, Kaislee Harris, Grayson Harris and Oddric Harris; and one great-great-grandchild, Molly Evans.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 12, 2026, at 2 p.m. at the Julesburg Christian Church, with Pastor Alan Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Sedgwick Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, June 11, 2026, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home in Julesburg.
