Darris E. Cumming, 89, of Julesburg, Colorado, passed away on September 6, 2026, at Sedgwick County Health Center in Julesburg.
Darris was born May 17, 1937, in Julesburg, Colorado, to George and Reva (Lammers) Cumming. He grew up in Julesburg, where he started school in a one-room schoolhouse, Fairy Dell Grade School, graduated from Julesburg High School in 1954, and later attended Colorado State University, where he earned a degree in Animal Husbandry. He had three cars, in 1953- car 1-burned, 2nd car hit a dead end going 80 mph and car 3 made it to graduation. Darris held offices in his fraternity, on the Ag School Council, and in the Student Union. Darris spent much of his childhood showing cattle. He won several prestigious awards in local and state fairs and the National Western Stock Show. He was in the cattle business one way or another for over 50 years.
On June 10, 1961, Darris married Peggy Caffey in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The couple was blessed with over 60 years together. The whole family enjoyed working with animals. They all were into 4-H, County Fairs, and the National Western Stock Show.
In 1972, he took over his uncle Ken Cumming's real estate business and sold many large farming and ranching operations throughout Colorado and Nebraska. Darris made his living in real estate for fifty years, and he ranched alongside that work, showing cattle for many years and bringing home more than his share of awards. He gave his time to 4-H, Rotary, and the local and state Republican committees. Darris retired in 2003. He and Peggy spent several years in Tucson, Arizona, chasing warmer winters, before making their way back home. One of Darris's great pleasures was the daily Liar's Poker game with his friends, a tradition that started years ago at the Wagon Wheel and eventually moved with him to the assisted living. In his later years, he spent much of his time driving back and forth to Holyoke to see Peggy.
Darris will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
Darris was preceded in death by his parents, George and Reva Cumming, and in-laws Burl and Mabel Caffey.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his sons, Justin (Kelly) Cumming of Littleton, Colorado, and Jason Cumming of Viroqua, Wisconsin; his grandsons, Brett and Trevor; and many other relatives and friends.
No services are planned at this time. Inurnment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Julesburg at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Darris's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsjulesburg.com.
