Chuck Powell

May 18, 1936 — March 6, 2024

CHARLES E. "CHUCK" POWELL, 87, of Sedgwick, CO, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at his home in Sedgwick.

Chuck was born May 18, 1936, in Ovid, Colorado, to Raymond and Edna (Harris) Powell. He graduated from Ovid High School and subsequently entered the US Army in 1955, where he served in the Korean War, achieving the rank of sergeant.

On May 21, 1955, Chuck married Joan Woodhams at the Ovid Methodist Church. Their union was blessed with three children: Larry, Gary, and Janalee. The couple moved south of Ovid, where they farmed and raised their children. Chuck started two trucking companies too. The first was Powell Brothers Trucking which hauled sugar beets. The second was Powell Trucking of Sedgwick which hauled commodities and ethanol.

It would be difficult to overstate Chuck's lifelong devotion to Sedgwick County. He was a statesman, leaving behind an indelible mark on his family, church, and community. Chuck was a longtime member of the Ovid Rural Fire Board, Representative for the Sedgwick County Trauma Advisory Board, and past Chairman of the Ovid United Methodist Church Board. He served nearly a decade on the ASCS Board, Platte Valley RE 3 Board of Education for sixteen years, most of which as Chairman. Chuck was integral in the remodeling of the local school and the addition of the school gym. He served eight years on the Northeastern Council of Local Government, working on such projects as Meals on Wheels and low-income housing renovation, to name a few. He served as Chairman of Premier Farm Credit of Northeastern Colorado for over sixteen years, the Northeastern Colorado Transportation Committee, the Marks Butte Water Board for 20 years, and the Selective Service Board for 20 years. Chuck committed two decades serving as a Sedgwick County Commissioner, where he played an impactful role in numerous projects and served as a liaison on myriad boards like the Sedgwick County Memorial Health Center and North East Colorado Health Boards, among others.

Chuck was a member of the Lion's Club for nearly 40 years. He was a member of both the Wheat & Corn Growers Associations, Farm Bureau, and the Sedgwick County Historical Society. Additionally, Chuck was a member of the VFW for four decades.

Chuck was a lover of God, his family, country, and community. He will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. Much could be said about a man like Chuck Powell, yet there would be much more left to say. A wise man once said, "The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example."

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Edna; son, Larry Powell; brothers, Gene, Bernard, Rex, Bob, and Ted; and a sister, Mildred Zimmerman.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of Sedgwick; children, Gary (Annamarie) Powell of Streamwood, IL; Janalee (David) Paiz of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Mikeal (Sheila) Powell, Christina (Anthony) Green, David (Kelsie) Paiz, Jr., Miranda (Bernard) Powell, Heather (Cody) Heintz, Leticia Paiz, and Darek Paiz); great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Powell, Ava Paiz, Peyton Heintz, Layne and Katlyn Green; along with many other relatives and friends.
