Jim was born on September 7, 1936, to Gus and Ada Brown in Sedgwick, CO. Jim grew up in Sedgwick and received his education from the Sedgwick Schools. Jim was the 2nd of 4 children. In his teen years he entered the Navy and served in Guam, Japan, and Hawaii. After his discharge, Jim made his living from various places. He worked for Colorado Road and Bridge in Colorado Springs. While there, he met his love, Shiela Kinnison. They were married on September 14, 1958, and to that union one son was born, Larry Gene Brown. They were married in Ovid and lived there throughout their 56-year marriage, until Shiela's passing. During those years, Jim was a member of the Ovid Lion's Club and the Ovid volunteer fire department. He worked for Sedgwick County Road and Bridge, Great Western Sugar Factory during campaigns, and spent many years with Farmers Elevator Company and Kinnison Farms. Jim also worked for the USDA inspecting train cars of grain before retiring. Jim retired when he was 75.

Jim and Shiela loved to do many things together throughout their marriage. They did a little traveling, had supper clubs and played cards with friends. They found a love for Square Dancing and were members of the Hicks 'N Chicks Square Dance Club for many years where they had numerous friends. They were in a Bowling League at Melody Lanes for many years also. Jim and Shiela attended church almost every Sunday at the Ovid Methodist Church. They also loved Bingo and playing the Lottery. They also traveled to Denver to spend time with their son's family and spoil the grandkids. After his retirement, Jim took care of Shiela with her failing health. After her passing he continued to bowl, play bingo in surrounding areas, go to church and attended the Senior Center where he had friends to eat a meal with and shared the love of doing puzzles together. Jim also volunteered at the Welcome Center in Julesburg, which he loved.
