Evelyn Elizabeth Dehning

December 26, 1925 — July 16, 2018

Evelyn Elizabeth Bangert Dehning, 92, passed away July 16, 2018, at her home in Julesburg, Colorado surrounded by her loving family.

Evelyn was born to Ted and Rose (Alber) Bangert on December 26, 1925, in Blue Hill, Nebraska, the first of six children. She was baptized on January 10, 1926, at Rosemont Lutheran Church by Pastor Ficken.

Evelyn's family moved to Big Springs, Nebraska when she was two years old. She was confirmed on May 5, 1940, at Zion Lutheran Church in Big Springs by Pastor M.P. Dreyer. It was at Zion where Evelyn met the love of her life, LaVern Dehning, before graduating from Big Springs High School in 1943.

After graduation, Evelyn moved to Denver, where she worked at Gates Rubber Company. When LaVern came home on leave in November of 1945, they were married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Denver on November 28th. LaVern returned to the service and Evelyn moved to Julesburg and began working as an operator at the telephone office.

Evelyn took time off from work when her children were born. After they were in school, Evelyn returned to work, this time for Safeway in the meat department. She worked at Safeway for 25 years. Other jobs Evelyn had were as a secretary at Ingram Electric and an aide at the Julesburg Nursing Home. She taught Sunday School for many years and belonged to many card groups.

After retirement, LaVern and Evelyn took off in their camper and traveled all over the United States and Canada. They ended up settling in Apache Junction, Arizona where Evelyn wintered for 35 years. While in Arizona, Evelyn was in charge of bingo in her park for 17 years, was the activity director planning different craft projects every week, and worked as a tour director organizing overnight trips for all in the Apache Junction area. Evelyn took up oil painting and created some real masterpieces. LaVern taught her how to use the scroll saw, and she created many beautiful, delicate designs. She and LaVern redid over 200 steamer trunks. Evelyn also worked at the Colorado Welcome Center and Orphan Grain Train.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, LaVern Dehning; daughter, Shelly Dunham; grandson, Billy Rains; brothers, Lavern and Wayne Bangert; and her sister, Loretta Ferguson.
