ELTON K. CHRISTIE, 86 of Cheyenne, WY, formerly of Chappell, NE, passed away April 14, 2019, at Granite Rehabilitation and Wellness in Cheyenne.

Elton was born October 6, 1932, in Naponee, Nebraska to Wayne and Hilda (Brown) Christie. He graduated from Mullen High School and went on to attend Chadron State College.

Elton later entered the U.S. Army, where he first served in the 10th Mountain Division and later was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He ultimately reached the rank of E5 Sargeant. Following his discharge, Elton returned to Nebraska, where he married Mary Jane Bailey on May 15, 1954. The couple was blessed with eight children. Elton worked in farming and railroad derailment clean up before eventually taking a job with the Nebraska Department of Roads, where he worked as a supervisor until his retirement in the late 1990s.

Elton was an avid outdoorsman, and loved camping, fishing, gardening, and traveling. He cherished many of the good times that he spent with his family at Lake McConaughy. Elton was a member of the Lion's Club for over 20 years, including serving two terms as District Governor. Elton was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as the Mayor of Chappell, NE. He and his wife, Mary Jane, were named the Nebraska Parents of the Year in 2000.

Elton was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane, in 2005 and a son, William, in 2015. Survivors include: his children Judi Christie, Hildy Christie, Mary (Doug) Bundy, Beth Christie, Dottie Kouba, Teresa (Jim) Wood, and Jon Christie; his 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and brother Jerry (Carol) Christie, along with many other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been established in Elton's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsjulesburg.com, where the service will be streamed live for those unable to attend.

Services will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Prairie Hills Funeral Home in Julesburg with Pastor Alan Harris officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Chappell Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Prairie Hills Funeral Home in Julesburg.
